Bhool Chuk Maaf Review: A Heartfelt Time-Loop Comedy with Hiccups & a Message

Story review of bhool chuk maaf

Directed by karan Sharma, it’s set in the holy and chaotic streets of Banaras. Bhool Chuk Maaf traces the life of Ranjan Tiwari (Rajkummar Rao), who is a charming yet lazy bachelor who only wants to get married to his sweetheart, Titli (Wamiqa Gabbi). But with a caveat—her father will not be assenting if Ranjan becomes a secure government employee.

What ensues is a surreal blend of jugaad (shortcuts), prayers, and vows to Lord Shiva. When Ranjan at last gets the job through dirty tricks, he remains forgetful of performing the good act he vowed before God. The consequence? A mystical and infuriating time loop that rewinds the day before his wedding—again and again.

Performance review of Bhool chuk maaf

Rajkummar Rao is decidedly in his element, smoothly combining sincerity and comic timing. His performance as Ranjan comes across as honest, flawed, and completely lifelike. Rao’s understated expressions and range as an actor lend the film its depth.

Wamiqa Gabbi, in her feature debut, impresses in limited screen space. She brings a feisty charm to Titli, and her rapport with Rao is good.

Supporting actors Sanjay Mishra (as Bhagwan, the fixer), Seema Pahwa, Raghubir Yadav, and Akash Makhija provide intense performances that add to the film’s offbeat realism.

Direction & Writing

Karan Sharma, making his directorial debut, tries something bold—employing a time loop to examine concepts of meritocracy, responsibility, and societal shortcuts. With assistance from co-writer Haider Rizvi, Sharma incorporates social commentary in the guise of humor and absurdity.

The first half is light-hearted, humorous, and chock-full of quirky characters. But the second half has some dull moments, with repetitive sequences and some logic-defying sequences. Still, the climax ties it all together with emotional depth.

What Works: Humor, Heart & a Refreshing Tone

What Doesn’t Work: Predictability & Pacing Issues

Final Verdict: Watch It for Rao, Laughs, and a Life Lesson

Bhool Chuk Maaf isn’t flawless, but it does keep its heart in the right place. Fresh concept, great performances, and a rewarding message make it a film worth seeing—particularly if you’re a fan of offbeat comedies with an emotional bite.

Rating: 3.5/5
